This Himalayan blend is mild and woody with intriguing overtones. Like all Mindroling incense, it’s ideal as a meditation aid. According to the Monastery, any spots or discoloration on the sticks are not defects.
Mindroling is one of the 6 major monasteries of the Nyingma school, founded in 1676 by Minling Terchen Gyurme Dorje. The name means “Place of Perfect Emancipation”. Special emphasis is placed on Buddhist scripture, astronomy, the Tibetan lunar calendar, calligraphy, rhetoric, and traditional Tibetan medicine. (courtesy wikipedia)

I first bought the Mindrolling monastery collection to check out all 5 different grades. At that point I liked this one because of the nice price and somehow nice “pungent” flowerlike smell (reminding little bit of Red Crystal -incense), so I next bought a whole packet of these. After that I noticed the smell was too intruding after all and one really big problem was that when I burned these in my flat incense-burner, with the ashes remaining, then the next incenses of other kinds got horrible pungent side-scent that made me feel ill from the remains (ashes) of the earlier burnt Mindroling grade 5.
I learned that I need to burn this grade 5 incense separately and in standing position so that it does not effect the next one.

Honestly, this is the best of the Mindroling Grades! I was shocked, too, but I purchased the Mindroling Legacy (I knew I enjoyed Mindroling in general) and loved them all, but this one really captured my heart. It wasn’t as pungent as Grade 1, nor as bland as Grade 3. This is the perfect in between for Mindroling incense. Ignore the fact that it’s listed as the lowest grade. It’s perfect the way it is. Experienced users and new users can enjoy this. Unlike the Grade 1, which is probably far too strong for Tibetan beginners. I’ve been using Tibetan incense for over 15 years, and Grade 1 still gave me a small headache after burning a full stick (these sticks burn FOREVER). I definitely recommend this one.

Interesting and pleasant smell, quite potent. Seems like similar quality ingredients to grade 1 but completely different in aroma, different color too. So grade 5 doesn’t mean lesser quality apparently. Has more of a resin smell, somewhat floral, possibly jatamasi. Reminiscent of amber resin but not synthetic. I like it.
SHIVENDER SHANDILYA –
Disappointing. If you have used the Mindroling Grade 1 or TPN Nectar, this will smell nothing like them. Not even a hint or whiff of the Grade 1 makes its way into this one.
As long as that is not a concern, on its own, it is a simple, smoky incense.
